'The natural giant of South East Asia', 'The New India', 'The Indonesian Surprise' are just a few labels Indonesia has received lately by observers, dignitaries and journalists internationally. With a GDP growth of over 6 percent in 2008 and another growth of 4 percent for 2009 and beyond for 2010, Indonesia has been in the limelight of many financial and economical stories. After two democratic elections as well as open foreign policies and inclusive domestic measures, Indonesia, home to the largest Muslim population, is emerging as a democracy with the makings of a harmonious, progressive multi-faith and multi-race nation.

BINUS University, Faculty of Language and Culture together with the International Office, invites you to come immerse yourself with the foremost private university in Indonesia for two weeks that will awaken your appreciation for this amazing country, particularly in the set-up of Jakarta as a global mega-city, home of regional and international market-leaders, yet still thick with beautiful traditions, customs and unique culture. It is the intertwine of such richness that bolsters our identity as a vibrant community with proud roots of our past, yet not without our growing pains, have emerged with resilient branches that boldly reach for ever greater heights.

OUTCOMES OF COURSE

  • Explore language used in mega-city setting for business, social and daily activities.
  • Gain relationship-building skills through placing mindset and thus language to engage new acquaintances in various setting.
  • Appreciate special nuances, cultural sensitivities and acquire skills to observe local etiquette.
  • Gain understanding of various culture groups within the multi-faith and multi-ethnic set up of Jakarta.

 

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Course materials are designed and developed by foreign language teachers to optimize learning outcomes for participants whose native language is English, Japanese or Chinese.
  • Pre-course materials and activities will be sent to participants so to maximize learning during course.
  • Cultural feast of visiting markets, museums, performances; learning to cook and many more; all the while improving your Indonesian language ability. Much of this happens in Bandung, a satellite city rich in traditional culture, modern trends and enterprising businesses that capture the fascination of many Indonesians and expats.
  • Learning Buddies: each participant will each have a BINUS University student as a learning partner to practice speaking with. These buddies are enthusiastic and high-performing students who will be eager to enrich your learning experience, not to mention learn from you as well!

  • Non-Indonesian Citizens
  • 18 years and above with valid traveling documents
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (for students from non-English Speaking countries evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL score of 550 and above preferred)
  • Completed application forms with supporting documents and full payment received by 30 April 2010 (please send in application forms and make queries if needed ahead of time)

OUR INSTRUCTORS

  1. Almodad Biduk Asmani
    Fluent in English and Indonesian, Mr. Asmani holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Master of Education from Monash University. He has special interest in Indonesian art and culture, particularly Indonesian movies.
  2. M.V. Santi Hendrawati
    Ibu Santi was a writer and senior editor in an Indonesian national magazine for over twenty years. As an award-winning Indonesian children stories writer, she is an expert in Indonesian story-writing. Amidst her busy schedule, she still serves as senior lecturer at BINUS University.
  3. Wishnoebroto
    Wishnoe was awarded his second Master Degree in American Studies as a Fulbright scholar. He is well versed in the cross currents of Indonesian and Western cultures, and conducts seminars on such cross-cultural appreciation and analysis here at BINUS University. He is also the coordinator of the Self Access Language Learning Center.
  4. Xuc Lin
    Xuc Lin is a faculty member of the Chinese literature Department of BINUS University. She is particularly interested in arts and literature, and has experienced the fusion of the Chinese cultural influences, among many others, into that of the larger culture in Indonesia.
  5. Agustinus Sufianto
    Agustinus spent part of his education in China and is fluent in both Indonesian and Chinese. Not only is he a full time lecturer at BINUS University, among his many cultural interests, Agustinus is an avid proponent and practitioner of Wushu, the martial art.
  6. Timur Sri Astami
    Ms Astami was awarded her Master degree in language teaching and received extensive training in Tokyo, Japan. She has since become a valuable member of the language teaching team at BINUS University. She is also sought after as a language trainer by companies.
  7. Nalti Novianti
    Ms Novianti has been teaching language to second or third language users for more than 14 years. This ranges from lecture halls and classrooms in universities to corporate settings. She holds a Master degree in Japanese culture and participates in various cultural exchange endeavours including translating Japanese comic for the Indonesian audience.

Step 2: Registration

  • Download and complete the Short Course Application Form
  • Transfer your payment of Short Course Fee by 30 April 2010
  • Submit the Application Form together with all documents required via email to io@binus.edu by 30 April 2010

Step 3: Confirmation

  • After we receive all required documents and payment, and your application is successful, we will send you:
    • A Letter of Acceptance
    • A Payment Receipt
    • Detail Course Information & Schedule
  • You will need to supply these documents to Indonesian Immigration if you are applying for a visa.

Step 4: You join the Short Course!
